Pleated Filters VS Washable Filters

We as humans often find ourselves comparing things to another. It’s in our nature. It is our way of seeing which opposing side is better than the other. For example, if I were to compare a slice of pizza to a salad, I would choose pizza…hands down. Superman versus Batman? Batman. Harry Potter versus Twilight? Harry Potter. Because wands, potions, and magic are just much cooler than some sparkling vampires. And finally- the whole reason for this blog- pleated air filters versus washable air filters.

When comparing a pleated filter to a washable filter, you’ll need to weigh your options and ask the right questions. Which of these work better? Which of these will benefit me more? How long does each last? Which one is ultimately better for my health? Well, in my opinion, the pleated filter wins this battle. Curious as to why? Well let me tell you. Washable filters may sound great at first, and they are…in the right setting. They last for about 2 to 3 years. They are durable and sturdy, which helps them to last so long. However, washable filters do not filter out the air as well as a pleated filter. They often have a low MERV rating; typically a MERV 5 or even lower. And even though they last for a couple of years, they still must be vacuumed or washed every 30 days! Wouldn’t it just be easier to change the filter instead of constantly having to wash it, wait for it to dry, and put it back in without knowing for sure if it’s fully clean or not? Washable filters are perfect for various types of boats, swamp coolers and areas with high moisture. On the other hand, pleated filters are a better choice for your AC/Furnace unit. They are able to reduce airborne allergens, bacteria, pollen, mold spores, fine dust, pet dander, etc. They do not support the growth of mold, mildew, bacteria and other gross things. They also last for up to 3 months. That’s two more months you have to not worry about your filter than you would with a washable one.

So which would you choose: pleated or washable?
